A great candle experience starts with proper candle care & maintenance
How to Care for your Candles from Hippy Crystal Vibes
- Keep your wick trimmed to ¼ inches at all times.
- Let the wax pool. Every time you burn your candle, allow the entire top layer to become a fragrant pool of liquid wax and you’ll get the best scent possible.
- Burn safely. Always burn your candle on a heat resistant surface, keep away from drafts and NEVER leave it unattended while lit.
- Any crystals that come into contact with the flame should be removed as soon as possible. Extinguish the flame and remove the crystal safely using pliers or a spoon.
- Dip your wick. Extinguish your wick rather than blowing it out to prevent excess smoke.
- Know when it’s time to say goodbye. When only ½ an inch of wax remains, it’s time to let your candle go.
- Candles should not be burned for more than four hours at a time.
Preventing ‘Memory’ Rings
As with all candles, the first burn is the most important. To begin, candles should be allowed to burn for one hour for every 1 inch in diameter of the actual candle size. It is important that the entire top layer of wax be liquefied before extinguishing it for the first time. If the wax is not allowed to liquefy/melt from edge to edge of the jar/tin/tealight, it will create a ‘memory ring’. Once a candle has this ‘memory ring’, it will continue to tunnel and to burn that way for the entire life of the candle.
Keep the wick trimmed to the proper length at all times
Keep the wick trimmed to ¼ inch at all times. It is suggested to trim the wick every 4 hours of burn time. When wick trimming, you should always extinguish the flame, let the candle come to room temperature, and trim the wick before relighting. Or simply trim the wick before lighting each time. Keeping your candle’s wick trimmed helps it burn more cleanly and efficiently.
Use a wick trimmer for a perfect trim.
Here’s how to properly use a wick trimmer:
- Place the bottom of the trimmer flush with the surface of the candle.
- Rock the trimmer back so that the “elbow” now rests on the surface of the candle.
- Ensure that your trimmer is angled to get the proper wick length. This will prevent the wick from being cut too short,
causing the candle to burn improperly.
- Bring the two handles together to trim the wick. Discard the remnant wick before lighting.
It is recommended that after burning for 4 hours, candles be extinguished, allowed to cool for two hours, and trimmed before relighting.
Dip your wick
Extinguish your wick rather than blowing it out to prevent an overabundance of smoke. While your flame is still lit, use a poker of sorts (wick dipper or old butter knife) and simply flick your wick downwards into your liquid wax and allow the wick to flick back upwards. Your wick will extinguish immediately with little to no smoke and will also coat your wick with a thin layer of wax making it easier to light your wick the next time. You can also use a ‘snuffer’.
Follow the half inch rule
Discontinue use of a candle when only ½ inch of wax remains at the bottom of the jar/tin/tealight. This will prevent possible heat damage to the counter/surface or container itself. The glass/tin/tealight can get hot on the bottom as the flame nears the base and most of the wax has been consumed. By following this instruction, the vessel won’t get too hot.
For safety’s sake
Always burn candles well away from drafts, other heat sources, and anything flammable. Make sure burning candles are out of reach of children and pets. Never leave a burning candle unattended.
Since these candles are usually packed full of botanical herbs and crystals, please take extra care when burning. Some of the herbs may alight naturally in the burning process and crystals that come into contact with the flame will get too hot – so keep a close eye on it and keep them away from anything flammable. Also ensure the crystals never touch the flame, any crystals that come into contact with the flame should be removed as soon as possible by extinguishing the flame and removing the crystals safely by using pliers or a spoon.
How to Store Your Candle Properly
The candle wax and fragrance/essential oils used are sensitive to both temperature and light, so please be careful when storing candles for an extended period of time. If you store your candle, be sure it is in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight or intense light. Keeping it in a dark place like a cupboard or box will protect it from fading and discolouration.
The Crystals that have been used to adorn most Hippy Crystal Vibes candles have been chosen to resonate with the intention of the specific candle, e.g. protection, good vibes, grounding, etc. The crystals will resonate with those intentions. Each candle comes with a little organza bag – when your candle is at its end, the crystals can be cleaned in hot water to melt away any soy wax residue and stored in the organza bag for safe keeping. If you wish to keep the crystal energy close you can carry them with you in your pocket throughout the day, place them next to your bedside, or anywhere else you feel you can benefit from the crystal energy.
Should you have a ‘crystal surprise’ candle: The crystal hidden inside the wax should be removed with care, using tongs or a teaspoon once it becomes visible, to ensure proper burning of the candle. Please exercise caution when doing so, so as not to burn yourself with the hot wax. Do not attempt to remove the crystals while the candle is still lit.
The crystals can be placed in the moonlight to charge overnight anytime you feel they need a little boost – especially if you do carry them with you and work with them often.
